Senior Engineer Arboriculture
Hackney Council has declared a climate emergency and is committed to creating a sustainable district. Use your expertise in arboriculture to enhance the well-being of the people that live and work in London's most diverse, dynamic neighbourhood. Reaching from the Square Mile to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, this is an area of rapid economic growth, particularly in technology, media, fashion and other creative industries. Hackney has more green spaces than any other inner London borough; some of the capital's finest schools; first class transport connections; excellent public services; and thriving arts, cultural and retail sectors. We seek people with ambition, creativity and commitment to ensure our economic growth provides benefits for everyone and creates opportunities to transform the lives of residents.
We are now seeking the services of an experienced Senior Arboricultural Engineer to provide an essential service to the public by arranging new planting and managing and conserving the council’s resources of trees in parks and open spaces as well as trees on the public highway. You must possess excellent communication and literacy skills as you will be writing technical reports relating to all aspects of tree growth and be able to foresee potential problems arising from trees in the urban environment. You will also arrange routine and urgent tree maintenance arising from inspections and organise tree planting projects.
You should know how to manage tree resources and how to recommend the most appropriate works to ensure our trees are kept safe, manageable and healthy at all times, including previous experience of how to determine tree health from ground level identifying pests, diseases and structural defects. You should also know how to go about your duties in accordance with the Health and Safety Policy and the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974).
Your responsibilities will also include giving demonstrations and talks on arboriculture and woodlands to schools and other community groups, so you must be knowledgeable on the subject, eager to learn, presentable and with an enthusiastic, intelligent manner.
You should be keen to use new technology to assist you in improving service delivery and personal performance, so the ability to use computerised software packages is essential. Previous experience dealing with the public, managing a large tree stock and supervising contracts and arboricultural work are required and you should have a National Diploma in Arboriculture or equivalent (min Level 3-4) working towards (Level5).

Bringing jobs and investment into the borough, securing the legacy from the 2012 Games, and making this a place of which we can all be proud.
