Be a Leader in the UK’s Most Awarded Markets Service

With 22 national awards in just seven years, Hackney’s Markets, Shop Fronts & Street Trading Service isn’t just best-in-class — it’s setting the standard. From Ridley Road to Broadway, our markets power local economies, cultural pride and sustainable growth. Now we’re looking for a Senior Markets Service Officer who can lead from the front, shape the next chapter, and make every trading day count.

The Role – Make Every Stall Count

As a Senior Officer, you’ll be on-site for the majority of your week, leading operations, managing frontline teams, supporting traders, and delivering visible impact in one of London’s most vibrant public-facing services.

This role blends commercial insight, service leadership and public engagement — you’ll play a vital part in our borough’s street trading success.

You’ll be:

- Managing day-to-day market operations — ensuring smooth running, great customer service and high standards on-site

- Coaching officers and crews to deliver confident, values-led service

- Supporting traders with licences, pitch support, queries and set-up

- Driving commercial growth by increasing occupancy and supporting new traders

- Monitoring compliance, resolving issues, and escalating enforcement where needed

Leading income recovery — reducing arrears and supporting fair trading

- Reporting defects, obstructions and urgent risks to protect the public realm

About Us:

- Representing Hackney to residents, businesses and enforcement partners

- You’ll work every Saturday and two Sundays per month, with evening and public holiday shifts.

About You

You’re more than just a manager — you’re a trusted presence in public space, a relationship-builder, and a driver of positive outcomes.

You’ll need to bring:

- Proven frontline or operational leadership experience, ideally in markets, retail, events, hospitality, enforcement or public services

- Strong commercial awareness and confidence to grow income and pitch occupancy

- A commitment to fairness, sustainability and public service

- Ability to manage licensing, inspections, trader engagement and on-site resolution

- Excellent communication skills, both face-to-face and in writing.

- Digital literacy — confident using Microsoft Office, CRM systems and tablets

- Comfort with outdoor working, manual handling, and physical movement across sites

Why This Role Matters

Hackney’s markets aren’t just places to shop — they’re places where communities gather, small businesses grow, and cultural identity thrives. This role ensures those values are protected, every day. As a Senior Markets Service Officer, you’ll help shape an inclusive, safe and sustainable future for trading across the borough — with a direct line to our wider strategic goals.

Key Accountabilities:

You’ll also be empowered to contribute to projects like:

- Hackney’s Zero Plastic Markets

- Black History Month Markets, Youth Takeovers and seasonal events

- Trader recruitment campaigns and inclusive licensing initiatives

- Emergency response and operational resilience during peak trading and events

This isn’t a desk job. This is a role for people who love being out there, leading change where it matters most — in our streets, our stalls, and our communities

Why Join Us?

- 22 national awards in 7 years – including LGC, NABMA, APSE and Hackney Stars

- Nationally recognised and internationally referenced for innovation and sustainability

- Home of the UK’s first Zero Plastic Markets

- A service that puts people first — for staff, residents and businesses alike

- Progression built-in: these roles exist because our people move up
