Principal Traffic Engineer

Join Enfield Council’s Journeys and Places team and play a leading role in transforming how people move around the borough. We're looking for a forward-thinking Principal Traffic Engineer to lead on all technical matters relating to traffic engineering and road safety, helping us deliver improvements that benefit communities across Enfield.
As a senior member of the Design & Construction team, you’ll provide expert guidance on traffic orders, road safety audits, and design standards. You’ll lead a team of skilled officers and act as the Council’s principal advisor on traffic engineering – ensuring our projects meet the highest standards for safety, accessibility and inclusion.
You will:
- Act as the Council’s technical lead on traffic engineering, road safety and traffic order compliance
- Provide expert input into complex and high-profile infrastructure projects
- Oversee the delivery of road safety audits in line with best practice and national guidance
- Ensure road safety is embedded throughout project lifecycles, aligned with Vision Zero and Healthy Streets principles
- Manage and develop a small team, fostering professional growth and innovation
- Contribute to shaping policy and procedures that influence how we create safer, more liveable neighbourhoods
About you:
You’ll bring significant experience in traffic engineering and an in-depth understanding of relevant UK legislation and guidance (such as LTN 1/20). You’ll have a strong track record in delivering engineering solutions that balance technical rigour with community priorities. Your ability to communicate complex information clearly, build strong relationships with stakeholders, and manage multiple priorities will be key to success in this role.
