Mayor's Assistant
£46,041 - £49,083 per annum
Fixed Term - until May 2026

Would you thrive in a political environment, as a trusted adviser and assistant to Newham’s Directly Elected Mayor?

This is a fast-paced, exciting and varied role which will provide challenge, opportunity and satisfaction in equal measure.  Working closely with the Mayor to provide her with comprehensive political support in her capacity as Directly Elected Mayor, you will be part of a wider Mayor’s Office team working with colleagues and Councillors across the council to deliver the Building a Fairer Newham ambitions.

Newham is one of the fastest growing, young and diverse boroughs in the country.  We have over 351,000 residents, over seven in ten of whom are from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse communities.  We are the third fastest growing borough in London.

As Newham’s Directly Elected Mayor, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, is driving a pioneering people-powered council agenda to deliver growth that puts people and communities at the forefront of all we do and celebrates our diversity.  Her ambitious growth plans are anchored in Community Wealth Building to tackle poverty and build an inclusive economy, as well as taking real action in the face of the Climate Emergency.

With a good understanding of councils and working in a political environment, you will be able to shape and deliver appropriate advice and support meetings, visits and events. Your focus will be both on forward planning and quick responses to emerging issues.  Securing the Mayor’s trust and building strong relationships across the council and beyond, a problem-solving approach, excellent communication skills – including drafting of speeches/speaking notes and managing social media, and juggling competing pressures to meet deadlines will all be essential.

You will work flexibly, with at least 3 days a week in the office or in person meetings and some out of normal hours working (evenings and weekends).

This post is established under Regulation 3 of the Local Authorities (Elected Mayor and Mayor’s Assistant) (England) Regulations 2002 and is politically restricted under section 2(1) of the Local Government & Housing Act 1989.

IMPORTANT: If you are an LBN member of staff and applying for this role as a secondment you should note that secondments are subject to the agreement of your current employing service. Please ensure that you inform your line manager of your intention to apply for the post in the first instance.
