Animal Caretaker

Hours: 25 hrs per week, 52 weeks per year.  9.00am to 3.00pm Monday to Friday, with 1 hour unpaid lunch break

Salary: Grade 1/2, spinal point 2 -5, depending on experience. Pro rata salary of £17,954 - £18,771 p.a. (FTE £25,854 - £27,030 p.a.)

We are looking to recruit a farm worker to look after the animals on the school farm and support learning about animal husbandry under supervision of the class teachers.

The job involves overseeing the care of the chickens, goats, rabbits, sheep, guinea pigs and any other animals that are brought in to the school Quad.

Role and Responsibilites

  • To remove loose dust and debris from outside floors, surfaces, plant and equipment by hand and/or using machines provided
  • To clean outside floors, potentially of a wide variety of different surface materials, by hand and/or machine and using a variety of cleaning products and chemicals
  • To clean vertical surfaces, including walls, doors, and partitions, which may include cleaning glass and working off steps and/or stepladders.
  • To remove rubbish and waste. This may include:
  • Removal of waste that requires safe handling procedures
  • Waste separation to comply with the re-use and re-cycling processes
  • Removing waste classified as unsanitary, hazardous and/or dangerous.
  • To use the relevant procedures of the school to record breakages, repairs and maintenance and monitor the quality of work carried out by directly employed staff, service providers and contractors.
  • To operate relevant machines and equipment and to make sure machines and equipment are maintained in safe condition
  • To contribute to the school maintenance and repair plan and to support its implementation, which may include the postholder carrying out relevant works
  • To carry out day-to-day maintenance and minor repairs in the school farm area, which may include works in the buildings and the grounds
  • Portering of animal feed and bedding
  • To ensure the animals in the Quad are fed and watered on a daily basis
  • To ensure all the hutches, pens, enclosures and surrounding area is kept clean on a daily basis
  • To be responsible for the ordering of animal feed
  • To check the health and welfare of the animals and to contact the vet when necessary
  • To ensure all injections, tagging etc. is up to date and completed
  • To ensure the safety of any visitors to the Quad area, by ensuring safety rules are in place and adhered to
  • Support the learning, under supervision of the class teacher, about animal husbandry and environmental stewardship through hands-on activities and workshops
  • Co-ordinate farm-related educational programs, under the supervision of the class teacher, and events for pupils, teachers and the community
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate farm experiences into classroom learning
  • Identify and improve all areas of operation in the school farm
  • To maintain animal records including dates of vaccinations, vet visits and outcomes of such
  • Know and ensure that the Quad is operating within all legal and health and safety requirements (eg. Foot and mouth disease)
  • To stay up to date on all health and safety issues regarding animals
  • To take appropriate action to identify, evaluate, minimise and manage any risks to health, safety and security in the immediate working environment 
  • To work in accordance with the values, culture, ethos, equalities and inclusion policies of the school proactively promoting anti-racist, anti-sexist and anti-discriminatory behaviours in the day-to-day operation of the job
  • To complete school based induction and any subsequent training required to improve performance.
  • To take part in the school performance management system.
