About Us

Newham Resident Engagement and Participation is an ambitious service that plays a pivotal role in improving the quality of life of our residents. The successful candidate will be working within the Custom House and Canning Town Community Neighbourhood team, including colleagues from our libraries, community engagement programmes and other Newham services. 

The post holder will be based at the newly refurbished Cundy Community Centre you will be working with the public, other local services and the community neighbourhood team in the South of the borough, this includes 4 libraries and the council managed community centres. The successful candidate will play a key role in the re-opening of the centre helping to create a well-used and thriving community space. 

Community Centre Assistants carry out a range of tasks including but not limited to: managing the community centre on a daily basis, opening and closing, taking and processing room bookings, use of databases and room bookings systems, ensuring the safety of the site and visitors , setting up and breaking down rooms, working with community groups, partners and the Community neighbourhood coordinator, cashing up and banking routines, undertaking everyday clerical tasks, liaising with hirers, assistance with planning, organising and carrying out activities, working with the Senior Officer to develop the wellbeing offer and similar programmes in the neighbourhood. On occasions Community Centre Assistants may also be required to support work in libraries or outreach in the locality. 

The candidate should have excellent customer care skills and experience, be able to stay calm under pressure, enjoy helping people and be genuinely passionate about the role of community centres in providing a range of opportunities for our residents. They should have community centre or similar customer focused experience, have a good level of literacy, numeracy and IT skills, experience of activities, and enjoy working with the public.
