About us

Newham is a place that is full of potential and brimming with energy and talent. Proud to be one of the youngest and most diverse boroughs anywhere in the UK, 72% of our residents are from ethnically diverse communities, speaking over 220 languages and our population of 351,00 is growing at a rate of 14%, the third highest rate of growth in London.

In recent years we have seen unparalleled levels of investment, growth, and interest in our Borough, but for all our successes, Covid-19 laid bare the endemic inequality that exists in our borough and how now, the Cost of Living crisis is exacerbating that. That’s why we are working towards Building a Fairer Newham, focused on economic security, health, equality and the environment.

All of this is anchored in our enduring commitment to developing an inclusive economy where all can benefit, driving people powered change, responding to the climate emergency and promoting the health, well-being and happiness of our residents and community.

This role sits at the centre of our approach to delivering this vision as a key member of the Newham Sparks team. Newham Sparks is our ambition for the Borough to become a catalyst – and London’s destination – for innovators and investors in the growing data sector. It will support our community into the jobs of the future whilst at the same time unlocking the value of data and digital in everything we do as a Council.

Further information about our Newham Sparks initiative can be found on https://www.newham.gov.uk/newhamsparks

About the role

The role will lead on projects to deliver effective change and accelerate the ambitions of the Newham Sparks strategy. The role will work with the Programme Manager and key leads across the organisation to design and mobilise projects and proactively monitor progress through delivery. This role will work with internal and external partners on initiatives that support attracting data businesses to the borough, developing our data/digital infrastructure, developing the skills pathways into the data sector and work with cross-cutting teams across the organisation to promote the use of data in the services we deliver. Typical projects could include working with our Transport or Environment teams to explore how data can be used in our efforts to tackle climate change, or working with our Education team to explore how we embed data skills into our education pathways to enable young people to learn the skills required for jobs of the future.

About you

You will be ambitious for the people Newham and proud to work with and to represent its diverse communities with energy, commitment and creativity. An experienced professional with strong project and stakeholder management skills, you will be able to lead on the design, planning and delivery of the projects and manage project reporting and governance. You will have experience leading projects that involve multiple stakeholders and partners to deliver its objectives. Experience in delivering projects focussed around digital inclusion, education and skills development, economic development or digital smart cities initiatives will be beneficial. Whilst you may not have worked in the data/digital sectors directly, you will need to demonstrate an interest and appetite to learn about how these sectors are shaping the future of work and how we can ensure Newham residents are set up to benefit from these changes.
