An opportunity has arisen for a qualified Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT), with  experience of working in a mortuary. The successful applicant will undertake the role of an APT for the purpose of receiving, storing, undertaking an autopsy on and releasing the deceased in line with policy, best practice and the Human Tissue Act, and in support of the Coroner, Pathologists and Police.   The role

The successful candidate will be assisting the Bereavement Service Team Leader & Senior Anatomical Pathology Officer with the smooth day-to-day running of the Mortuary to ensure that the workflow and turnaround of all post mortem work is maintained in a timely manner. The post holder will be responsible for undertaking all duties related to admission, identification and safe storage of deceased bodies including but not limited to undertake:

  • Preparation of bodies prior to post-mortem
  • Evisceration of the deceased as determined by the pathologist and local protocol
  • Reconstruction of the deceased following a post-mortem
  • Responsibility for samples from post-mortem
  • Facilitate viewings and police identification in conjunction with the coroner’s service
  • Receipt and release of bodies procedure and accurate maintenance of records in accordance with the services SOP
  • Maintain high standards of hygiene within the mortuary
  • As an individual to which the human tissue authority licence applies
  • Statutory and additional conditions of the HTA licence are complied with
  • Suitable practices are used while carrying out this activity
  • You will need to be a resilient individual who will have the ability to deal with difficult situations and manage sensitive information
  • You will have the ability to work individually or as part of a team

Experience in dealing with bereaved families preferred. Deceased are received from the community and checking the validity of all patients’ details is necessary. APT’s operate on behalf of the Coroner and provide a post mortem service delivering high standards of care, maintaining good working relations with all service users, promoting effective team working and the professional image of the Anatomical Pathology service within the organisation.

About you

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Mortuary team. The successful applicant will undertake the role of an APT for the purpose of receiving, storing, undertaking an autopsy on and releasing the deceased in line with policy, best practice and the Human Tissue Act, and in support of the Coroner, Pathologists and Police.

The post holder will be required to assist in all aspects of the Mortuary Service including an on-call rota.

Technical Knowledge and Experience

  • Essential-hold level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or equivalent RIPH APT qualification.
  • Desirable- 2 years' experience working within a mortuary setting
  • Demonstrate technical and scientific Knowledge and understanding of mortuary policy, procedure, and human anatomy
  • Essential experience in high risk and forensic post-mortems
  • Ability to take an organised approach to own workload whilst dealing with conflicting priorities and to ensure a customer service focused approach
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of health and safety including infection control, manual handling, and risk assessments
  • Knowledge of and ability to manage sensitive intelligence and information securely
  • Proven ability to identify and implement service improvements
  • Essential ability to maintain accurate mortuary records, in compliance with standard operating procedures, national guidance and human tissue authority requirements
  • Demonstrate an awareness of politically sensitive issues
  • The role will be based in an enabled and empowered team focussed service where all the officers are expected to work as one team to assist in the development of a culture where knowledge and experience is shared and responsibility for making decisions on complex issues
