Sessional Youth Practitioner
£17.36 - £18.93 hourly rate, JNC grading for youth and community workers
Overall Purpose of Role
As a significant member of this Big Lottery funded preventative mental health service, you will be willing to get stuck in to establishing this service in a demanding and challenging context, positively responding to challenges with creative thinking and a can-do attitude.
You will have a history of working with vulnerable young people with the skills and attributes to build excellent working relationships with young people, school staff, parents and other professionals working in the community. You will understand the challenges families face and have a sensitivity to working with schools to support young people to thrive.
You will be comfortable using your youth work skills to work in both formal school contexts, as well as Informal community contexts. You will be using your excellent facilitation skills to deliver a range of interventions.
You will have robust recording and self-management skills; able to manage a complex caseload while working creatively with other services and professionals to best meet the needs of young people.
You will have experience of working with young people who have emerging mental health difficulties, additional needs and a keen interest in building resilience in young people.

Your Time Service
Managing your own caseload of young people, providing 1:1 bespoke wellbeing support to young people aged between 5 to 25 (those with SEND needs) in a variety of settings which may include schools, virtual platforms, young peoples’ homes and other community settings, as appropriate to meet their needs.
Wellbeing Roadshows
Facilitating pop up sessions with professionals across Newham to meet the needs of diverse audiences (both young people and professionals).
Youth Panel
Planning, delivering and supporting the delivery of Youth Panel. Empowering and support vulnerable young people 10 to 25 (those with SEND needs) to be actively engaged in decision making on service strategy and wider matters that affect them, raising the profile of their voice within Newham, as well as nationally.
Recording, administrative and ad hoc tasks (in line with service needs)
Relating to your role there will be routine and adhoc reporting and administrative tasks to be completed in line with standard operating procedures and upon line manager’s request.
Job Context
- Full Time 36 hours (job share and part time with a minimum of 21.6 hours may be considered)
- The post holder reports to the Mental Wellbeing and Resilience Manager / Mental Wellbeing and Resilience Coproduction Lead, as relevant.
- The post holder will be required to prioritise taking annual leave during school holidays and to work to a flexible schedule involving some extended afternoons, evenings and, occasional weekends.
- The post holder in the current climate will be working in accordance with government and LBN guidance in relation to working from home but ordinarily the role will require an individual to travel to a number of school sites and community settings across the borough.
