Team Leaders x 2 (Development Management)

Job reference numbers: GLA1161

Interview date: To be confirmed

Grade: 10

London has evolved over many decades, resulting in an extraordinary web of distinctive residential streets, squares, markets parks, offices, industrial and creative spaces. The built environment we see today, the legacy of previous generations has not just shaped the way London looks but has had a profound impact on how and where we live, work, study and socialise with one another. London is in another period of growth and these positions provide a great opportunity to help deliver this phase of London’s development and growth.

There are two positions and the experience of the ideal candidates will speak for itself. They can lead from the front and shape a high-quality strategic planning service within the Development Management section of the GLA’s Planning Unit.

You will be politically astute and have a proven track record in London and be confident in dealing with complex strategic planning issues, planning appeals/JR’s and dealing with a huge variety of applications and competing priorities.

You will manage strategic planners who assess planning applications that are referred to the Mayor and work in collaboration with boroughs to deliver the ambitions of the London Plan. You will understand how to apply the London Plan in a pragmatic and sensible way that encourages development and delivers the Mayor’s objectives.

A detailed knowledge and understanding of national and regional planning and development issues, legal processes and policy trends are essential. You will be expected to present reports to the Mayor and Deputy Mayors directly so you will need excellent, written and verbal communication skills. You will also need exceptional negotiation skills and the ability to work successfully with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

You will have a degree/post graduate qualification in planning or equivalent with eligibility for RTPI membership. You will also have demonstrable post-qualification experience in dealing with sensitive planning issues.

Please ensure your supporting statement clearly addresses the person specification Criteria (Technical requirements and behavioural competencies).

This role will be based at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL). GLA staff are working largely from home, with office space available.  Over the coming weeks and months, we will be moving to hybrid working as part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.

London's diversity is its biggest asset and we strive to ensure our workforce reflects London's diversity at all levels. We welcome applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, gender identity, gender expression, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability. We particularly encourage applications from Black, Asian and Minority ethnic candidates and disabled candidates who are currently underrepresented in our workforce.
