Job introduction

Are you passionate about learning and organisational development?

Are you able to build and maintain influential relationships, collaborate and work effectively in partnership with a diverse range of stakeholders at all levels of the organisation?

Do you want to shape a variety of development programmes and projects?

If so, consider applying for the role of Lead Consultant with us!

We expect our Lead Consultants to be able to support directorates across the organisation but, at the moment, this role is intended to oversee our Families, Children and Learning (FCL) directorate learning as well as shaping and leading our corporate L&D programme. It's a role with a lot of variety and possibility for you to really make a difference to the experience of a large number of people within Brighton & Hove City Council!

About the role

About the work

FCL’s strategy is outlined here Families, Children and Learning (brighton-hove.gov.uk). They play a key part in delivering our anti-racist promise and fair and inclusive aims as well as working on the Workplace Race Equality Standards for social care Council's social care team turn anti-racist pledge into action (brighton-hove.gov.uk). You'll work with the directorate to understand and manage their annual learning needs and consider areas such as how we can bring a more intersectional approach to the learning offered.

You’ll also be responsible for shaping our corporate development programme and will contribute to ensuring we become a fair & inclusive employer. This means working with our BME, LGBTQ+, Disabled Worker & Carer Fora and Women’s Network to ensure all our staff can develop and reach their potential with us.

About you

We’re looking for someone who, from day one, will shape our L&D programme, bringing others along with them. Whether this is reviewing our ‘Diverse Talent Programme’ with our workers fora or working with FCL colleagues to scope and agree their learning needs for the year ahead, you’ll have the ability to quickly understand the challenges and needs of others and build strong relationships to find a way forward.

You'll be a role model for the behavioural change we're looking to embed in the organisation - whether this is our new Ways of Working programme, approaches to becoming a more diverse and inclusive organisation or demonstrating our leadership behaviours.

You’ll work with and manage a team of well-established and experienced consultants and oversee our administration team, so we are looking for someone passionate about developing and getting the most from others as a line manager and able to take responsibility for keeping the service running smoothly.

You could also be drawn into specific organisational development work (for example reviewing the development needs of a service given changes in legislation, practice or policies) and so you'll be comfortable creating and facilitating sessions and finding a way forward in partnership with a range of stakeholders.

Why apply?

This role offers the perfect opportunity if you’re looking to get your teeth around an L&D programme that has significant scope.

You’ll be given freedom to shape the learning programmes you’re responsible for and really make your own mark, impacting thousands of people across the council and developing yourself as a senior L&D professional.

You’ll learn lots about working in a complex organisation through working in partnership with a variety of different stakeholders – senior leaders through to front-line staff, our worker fora through to Trade Union Representatives.

The budget available allows for us to invest in a wide range of courses, with £80,000 spent on our corporate programme each year, a similar amount dedicated to FCL development and possibilities to apply for funding for development that supports Our People Promise or our Fair & Inclusive Action Plan.

Interview Date: 25 or 27 July 2022
