Do you have (or will you soon have) a degree in town planning or a related discipline? Are you interested in pursuing a career in planning policy and urban regeneration?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity that could be perfect for you!

We are looking for a graduate planner to work on planning policy in the Place and Design team at Waltham Forest Council. We can offer exciting opportunities to develop your planning policy skills whilst broadening your experience by working on development management, masterplanning, urban regeneration, infrastructure planning and much, much more. This is a career graded post, so there will be plenty of opportunities to progress as you learn and develop on the job.

There has never been a more exciting time to work for Waltham Forest Council. We are at the forefront of sustainable development in London, with an ambitious programme of investment in the borough’s places, people, and infrastructure. Our programme is based around economic growth and investment in our 15-minute neighbourhoods, working with and securing benefit for local communities while responding to the economic recovery challenges of the pandemic and the impact of the Climate Emergency.

We are delivering impactful change with and for our diverse communities across the borough. We celebrate the strength in diversity. We want to hear from people of all different types of backgrounds.

Do you think this looks interesting, but you’re not sure? Do you have questions about the role, or what it’s like to work at Waltham Forest? If you do, please contact Sarah Parsons Sarah.parsons@walthamforest.gov.uk or Oliver Norman,  Oliver.norman@walthamforest.gov.uk.

The Role

As part of your training programme as a graduate planner, you will have the opportunity to learn from Principal Planners as we take our new Local Plan through to adoption and beyond. You will work on ambitious programme of Supplementary Planning Documents, Design Codes and other area-based planning initiatives. You will contribute to our infrastructure planning service, making sure that investment in the borough secures the facilities and services that our local communities need. You will work closely with colleagues in Development Management and Area Regeneration as well as Housing, Highways and Capital Delivery.

We are embracing a hybrid approach to working in the office and working from home. We do ask team members to come into the office for at least one day a week, but for the rest of the week it’s up to you where you work from. We’d also be happy to talk about any other flexible working arrangements you’d like to discuss.

The attached Role Profile (SO1- PO3 Career Graded) gives more details about the role – but if you have any questions at all, please do reach out to us.

We’re really looking forward to hearing from you.
