Hackney Council is passionate about its Sustainability and Environmental Services, and committed to continue to maintain and enhance its public realm and estates, as well as putting in measures to help address the climate emergency in both the short term and into the future. This is an exciting time to join the newly restructured Sustainability & Environmental Services Team and contribute to our ambitions, and as the Health and Safety Assistant you will be supporting our work to make Hackney cleaner, safer and greener.

Sustainability and Environmental Services is based at the Waste Services Depot on Millfields Road. We employ around 650 staff and over 120 vehicles are used to deliver the services, which are provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Working with the Health and Safety Manager you will help ensure all services operate safely and strive to improve the health, safety and welfare of all employees.

You will help to promote a positive health and safety culture in the workplace. You will undergo training in order to possess in-depth, working knowledge of current health and safety practices and legislation and, alongside the Health and Safety Manager, you will be responsible, using your knowledge, to control risks and ensure the services meet current safety standards and that all employees comply with safety policies and practices.

You should have proven IT skills and be a good communicator, with the ability to plan work, inspire and motivate staff.  You will be a team player who can coordinate work with other departments, contractors and service managers.  Good judgement and decision making skills are essential in this role, as is being able to deal with staff in a professional manner.

We are looking for a highly driven Health and Safety Assistant who can work under pressure, has excellent organisational and motivational skills and has the ability to complete further training. You will need to be available to work flexible hours to ensure there is support available to the service as necessary.
