ABOUT US

Newham Together – The best place for children and young people (click here to view our recruitment video)

There has never been a more exciting time to practise, develop, and grow as a Senior Social Worker at Newham.

You may have heard that Newham is on a journey to Good in which we are making ground; Ofsted recently recognised the “sustained and steady” progress we are making following our recent monitoring visit, the findings of which you can read in full here.

Embedding new, permanent Senior Social Workers into our workforce is key to our ambition of becoming a centre of excellence in Children’s Social Care by 2023. Senior Social Workers are our present frontline experts and our leaders of the future. Senior Social Workers can now look to a Social Care Academy, an expanded QA service, and a team of Family Therapists to support their practice and enrich their learning. Senior Social Workers can also expect significant support to help them achieve personal career goals. These changes are a small part of the positive impact that our permanent, stable senior leadership team are making.

We are continuing to look at innovative ways of working and how we can offer maximum flexibility to our social workers; remote working wherever possible is now a reality at Newham. We know that social workers are most effective when they’re happy, healthy and able to work flexibly, so we’ve implemented wellbeing initiatives, invested in new support roles, and have redesigned services to reduce caseloads and give back something invaluable to our social workers – their time.

Joining Newham as we continue on our journey to Good will be an invaluable experience and look great on any Senior Social Worker’s CV.

Apply now, and be part of our success.

ABOUT THE JOB

We are currently looking for a Senior Social Worker to join the following services:

  • MASH and Assessment
  • Safeguarding and Intervention
  • Children in Care

Senior Social Workers have a vital case holding role delivering high quality social work to best serve our children and families whilst supporting lesser experienced colleagues. SSWs will potentially take on responsibility for supervising social work students on placement at Newham so we welcome Practice Educators, though this is not essential for the role and most senior social workers do not supervise students. Our Social Care Academy does have limited places for staff to complete their practice educator course if this is an area of development that interests you.

Senior Social Workers at Newham are expected to support less experienced colleagues by sharing their knowledge and providing insight into what makes our practice great. SSWs will deliver and supervise social work interventions, including holding complex cases themselves and making key decisions that impact both children and families and the performance of the service.

Senior Social workers are supported by their Team Manager, their Assistant Team Manager, and can look to our clinical team and Practice Development Social Workers for support and guidance with complex cases. We like to work together.

For more information and a full list of duties please download the job description.

For an informal discussion about this role please email Liam Barrell liam.barrell@newham.gov.uk to be put in touch with the relevant Service Manager.

ABOUT YOU

‘People at the heart of everything we do’

We're looking for resilient, experienced Senior Social Workers who are passionate about improving children and young people’s lives. You are full of energy and enthusiasm, taking a creative but pragmatic approach to practice, setting SMART goals to help create change where it’s needed to achieve positive outcomes for our children and their families. You already embrace our people-focused values and want to be an active part of our ‘Newham Together’ journey.

You have at least 3 years’ post qualified experience and an understanding of working effectively within a diverse, urban community. You share our ambition and energy in embracing new ways of working. We’re looking for people who have a genuine interest in a restorative, relationship based practice model drawing on systemic thinking to inform your approach to building effective relationships with children, families and communities.
