Principal Building Control Surveyor with market supplement (£10,000/£12,000)

  1. To contribute towards a high quality specialised building control service and to assist in providing the effective management of the day-to-day functions of one of the building control area teams.
  2. To Assist the Team Leader and supervise staff within allocated geographical area.
  3. To make recommendations for the determination of building regulation applications or decisions to take enforcement action under delegated powers in a designated area of the borough.
  4. To give expert specialist advice to members of the public, other council departments, council Members and interested parties on Building Control matters either in person, by phone or through correspondence.
  5. To undertake the Council's responsibility to inspect building and construction work at all relevant stages on building regulation and enforcement cases, such visits will involve attending locations alone and encountering situations that may involve personal risk.
  6. To carry a full caseload and manage a number of major complex proposals, initiatives and/or projects simultaneously, responding quickly to changed circumstances and balancing often conflicting priorities under pressure.
  7. To undertake negotiations with developers and their professional multi-disciplinary design team on the most complex cases to achieve desired outcomes.
  8. To work with minimum supervision and to take the initiative in assessing the content of the most complex applications and other work.
  9. To ensure that public safety is preserved by responding on a 24 hour basis to reports of alleged dangerous structures and surveying and certifying the condition of such structures, liaising with the emergency services and ensuring that appropriate action is taken, including the direct on-site instruction of the Council's emergency works contractor to remove immediate danger or to erect shoring or hoarding. This post is included within the LBTH Market Supplement Scheme and will receive an additional monthly payment equivalent to £10,000p.a. for the first year and £12,500 p.a. for the second year, subject to standard terms and conditions.
