Job introduction

This is an exciting opportunity to join the city council’s Sustainability team. Having declared a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency in December 2018, the city council is now seeking a Sustainability Project Officer to help develop and deliver a range of sustainability projects, with a focus on our 2030 Carbon Neutral programme and promoting action on climate change.

About the role

Building on your significant experience of working in a sustainability environment and your knowledge of climate change related policy and practice, you will provide technical advice and support on a wide range of sustainability issues to councillors, officers and partner organisations. Particular focus for this role will be on adaptation and city resilience to the impacts of climate change. The role will also support progress of other key workstreams - potential themes include climate mitigation, sustainable food, sustainable buildings, green infrastructure, low carbon design and the circular economy. You will work to ensure that sustainability and climate is reflected properly in key council plans and policies as well as supporting council services in building their knowledge and capacity where necessary.

Using your project management experience, you will work closely with various city council services to establish and help deliver projects and initiatives that support the council’s Carbon Neutral 2030 commitment. This includes building and presenting business cases, seeking and securing external funding, leading on procurement activity, contract management, monitoring and reporting and inputting into climate communication and community engagement plans. You will also work on projects with a wide range of local, regional, national and international partners and sectors, including community organisations, businesses, The Living Coast Biosphere and the Greater Brighton City Region, and other city stakeholders.

Further information about this role, including a detailed list of responsibilities and person specification criteria, can be viewed in the Job Description and Person Specification.
