About the role

We are looking for individuals with the following skills:

  • Empathy and sensitivity to children with SEND and their families
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Ability to carry out safety instructions as required on transport to keep children and young people safe.

Most of our transport is commissioned from local taxi firms who provide vehicles, drivers and  Vehicle Passenger Assistants (VPAs) where needed. However, the Council would like to create a ‘bank’ of our own staff, who could cover any shortages that can and do arise.

Subject to distance and feasibility, you would get free pick up from home and drop off at work or back home and the reverse at the end of the day, plus an hourly pay of £9.50 per hour. We will provide online training prior to starting.

This position is subject to an enhanced DBS, good references and right to work in the UK checks.

As part of your application, you will need to complete your education and work history and upload a supporting statement. Your supporting statement is the most important part of your application as it will be used in the shortlisting process to assess whether you meet the essential requirements for the role that are set out in the person specification and to decide whether you should be offered an interview. Before you start your application, please read our guidance here (Supporting statement guidance (brighton-hove.gov.uk)) as this gives important advice which will increase your chance of success in the shortlisting process.

Additional information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.

Work Permits: This role does not meet the requirement for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Points-based Immigration System. Successful candidates will need to evidence that they have the Right to Work in the UK.

Company information

Please note that this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and is subject to a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Check.

We welcome applications from all sections of the community but particularly encourage applicants from a BME or White Other background as well as those who identify as disabled, LGB, male or trans as these groups are currently under-represented in our Directorate workforce.
