The Deaf and partially hearing team (Dph) consists of Qualified Teachers of the Deaf and support assistant posts including our BSL Tutor/Deaf Instructor. The team works with children, their families, early year’s settings, schools (mainstream and special) and college. The team are part of the wider Sensory Support Service which Ofted/CQC (Local Area Inspection July 2021) described as a service that is highly regarded and valued by parents and education providers.

We work in close partnership with other specialist teams in the borough and with our partners in the health service. The Dph team provides advice and support to Deaf and partially hearing children and young people aged 0 – 25 to promote their communication development, inclusion, empowerment, progress and raising of attainment.

Our bilingual sensory support assistant has a key role to play in effective service delivery. The present post holder is retiring after 29-years of service in Tower Hamlets, and we are looking to recruit to this vacancy from January 2022.

We are looking for a skilled and experienced teaching assistant, or a family support worker with some direct teaching experience, who is familiar with working in a diverse multi-cultural environment. The post holder will have bilingual communications skills and be able to work with families for whom English is not their first language. We would like you to have British Sign Language skills (Level 1 minimum, Level 2 desirable), or to demonstrate a willingness to learn. We can support your training if required.

The ideal candidate would have experience of work across a diverse age range, including very young babies and pre-school children. You may have a wider knowledge of special educational needs and will show a commitment to supporting successful inclusion. You will also appreciate the importance of teamwork within a peripatetic service and be able to show evidence of supporting colleagues.

This is a peripatetic role. You will be expected to work in a variety of different locations across the borough. A travel allowance is attached to this post.

If you believe you have the right skills and experience for this post, and you want to come and work in a dynamic borough like Tower Hamlets, then we would like to hear from you.
