About the role

Libraries Coordinator – Community Engagement

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team to engage with the local community and support a wide range of services.

Brighton & Hove Libraries are recruiting a Libraries Coordinator to support the operation and development of library services to meet the needs of the communities we serve.

Do you want to make a difference to and contribute to your local community? Are you passionate about delivering excellent customer service? If the answer is yes, we'd like to hear from you!

As Libraries Coordinator you will:

  • provide enquiry and information services for customers
  • recruit, train and supervise volunteers to support libraries services
  • help procure a new volunteer management system for Libraries
  • support events, activities, and targeted outreach work with local communities
  • work with partner organisations and services to meet people’s needs

As part of our team of Libraries Coordinators, you will assist in the deployment, training and supervision of Library Officers, casual staff, and volunteers. You will spend about half of your time on duties including working on the Libraries Information Hub, answering enquiries, and providing information to public and staff, and occasionally being the Supervisor in charge at Hove Library. You may also be required to deputise for the Daily Manager over lunch times, or when the Manager is caught up with another operational issue.

The other half of your time will be spent coordinating the delivery of library services in your community engagement specialist role, with an emphasis on supporting volunteers. Volunteers make an important contribution to a range of library services, enabling staff to provide enhanced services to customers.

Due to the nature of this people-focused, varied work, it can be challenging, but also very rewarding. Resilience and openness to change are vital to be successful in this role as well as having a good balance of people and IT skills.

The post will require evening and weekend working. It is based at Jubilee Library but will occasionally involve working in different locations across the City.

As part of your application, you will need to complete your education and work history and provide answers to some shortlisting questions. Your answers to the shortlisting questions are the most important part of your application as they will be used in the shortlisting process to assess whether you meet the essential requirements for the role that are set out in the person specification and to decide whether you should be offered an interview. Before you start your application, please read our guidance here (Shortlisting questions guidance (brighton-hove.gov.uk)) as this gives important advice which will increase your chance of success in the shortlisting process.

Additional information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.

Work Permits: We may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Points-based Immigration System. Please see Gov.uk for more information on the Skilled Worker Visa.
