About the role
Brighton and Hove have recently implemented an innovative model for children and adults with learning disabilities to create a strong, sustainable and ambitious whole life pathway.
The management of children’s and adult’s disability services has been merged within our Families, Children and Learning Directorate with two Heads of Service, one with responsibilities 0-24 years and one for 25+.
This post will lead all our social work assessment and provider services for children and young adults with learning disabilities (0-24 years) in the City.
Working together in close partnership with the Head of Specialist Community Disability Services 25+, you will have a key role in creating a whole life pathway for people with learning disabilities and specifically to ensure a strong and supportive transition phase to prepare young people for adulthood. Alongside families and partners in health, the community and voluntary sector and across the council, the focus will be on empowering children, young people and their families to have as much choice as possible and to promote independence and vocational opportunities. Brighton and Hove is committed to co-production with families and service users and you will be expected to work closely with them as the new service develops.
You will lead a large team of children’s and adult social workers and early help workers alongside a range of respite and short break provision for children and young adults. You will ensure that the full range of statutory duties in relation to disabled children and young adults is carried out to a high standard, including child protection, adult safeguarding and deprivation of liberty assessments. You will also ensure that our services offer best value and that the substantial budgets in this area of the service are managed effectively.
You will be a qualified social worker with successful experience of management within a social work service. You will have a good understanding of disability and the impact of disability on families, and you will be committed to working with families and young people to improve services. You will be a transformational leader who understands the importance of vision, culture and practice to harmonise the different staff groups to be a high performing, customer focused team.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.
