Our ambition

We're determined to make Islington fairer. To create a place where everyone, whatever their background, has the opportunity to reach their potential and enjoy a good quality of life.

We also have an ambitious goal – to be the best council in the country – with every employee clear about the part they play, and inspired, focused, and supported to give their very best.

We want to build an organisation where employees feel valued, inspired, and empowered to help us achieve our goals and provide the best services possible to our residents.

Our values and behaviours

‘Be Islington’ is about setting a clear challenge about what it means to be an Islington employee and sets the standard for every new recruit.

We ask our employees to ‘Be Islington’ – playing their part in working together for a fairer borough, and to always be collaborative, be ambitious, be resourceful, and be empowering (‘CARE’).

Islington Council has a number of exciting opportunities for qualified domestic gas engineers within its in-house repairs and maintenance service. Reporting to the Senior Mechanical Engineer, the Domestic Gas Engineer will play a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of domestic gas appliances within the borough. As well as completing annual landlord gas safety checks to approximately 10,000 properties in the north of the borough, the gas service is also responsible for completing responsive breakdown repairs and successful candidates will have an aptitude for both areas of work. In order to deliver the highest levels of service the Council operates an out of hour’s Rota, which includes regular weekday evening and weekend shifts. Out of hours’ work is contractual and as such attracts an unsocial hour’s payment of 12% of gross salary in addition to the basic salary as indicated. The Council is looking for enthusiastic, diligent, and suitably qualified gas engineers to join our existing team. As this role will involve daily interaction with customers, we require individuals with excellent interpersonal skills who will strive to achieve the best outcome and service delivery for the residents of Islington.

Closing date: 23:59 on Sunday 17 October 2021.

Proposed interview and test date: TBC.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Joseph Grace Senior Mechanical Engineer on 0207 527 7732 or Trevor Frater, Gas Operations Manager on 0207 527 8530.
