About Us
Havering Music School is the Local Authority Music Service for the borough. We provide instrumental and vocal tuition in primary and secondary schools in Havering. Our team of over 66 teachers deliver some 500 hours of tuition per week in schools and there are currently over 2,500 students learning to play instruments with HMS.
As well as tuition in schools we offer a wide range of out-of-school-hours activities. These include lessons, opportunities to play or sing with other musicians in ensembles and to perform in our many concerts. We have a very large and successful Saturday & Weekday Music Centre for school age students as well as adult provision.
We have a full range of bands, choirs, ensembles and orchestras that rehearse weekly at our Music Centres and perform regularly in local venues e.g. the Queen’s Theatre and at other community sites.
Our reputation for producing excellent players is growing across London and, as a result, our students are regularly invited to perform with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra and Royal Opera House in various educational projects.
About the Job
We invite applications from enthusiastic and motivated instrumental and vocal teachers to join our expanding service. Throughout the year we have opportunities to teach all orchestral, band and contemporary instruments and voice. We are also developing our electronic music provision.
You may be asked to teach adults as well as in secondary and primary schools throughout the borough. You must have skills to teach to grade 8 minimum on your main instrument and should demonstrate a knowledge of the ABRSM and/or Trinity examination syllabus. You may be expected to teach in groups. We are particularly interested in applications from teachers who are also willing to lead mixed beginner ensembles, musicianship classes and whole class instrumental provision.
The post currently pays TBC per hour plus holiday pay and is pensionable through the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.
About You
The successful applicant will have recognised musical qualifications or demonstrate evidence of equivalent experience. Experience of instrumental teaching in small and large groups will be an advantage.
You will need to be energetic and full of enthusiasm and in return you will find the experience of passing on your expertise enormously rewarding. You will also need to be resourceful and organised.
We have a supportive management team and regular in-house training. Through our wide partnership links we can also offer frequent and varied additional CPD opportunities.
The post is subject to an Enhanced Clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
For an informal discussion about the post, please email musicschool@havering.gov.uk
The closing date for the receipt of applications is 17th September 2021, however, interest in this job may be high and we therefore reserve the right to close the vacancy early.
You will be notified if your application has been successful. Interviews are scheduled to be held during September 2021, at which you will be asked to give a short performance; this may be virtual if restrictions change.
