About Shelter
A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.
At Shelter we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent.
We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation.
About the team
Our People Directorate provides the strategic lead on people management and organisational development and aims to enable the organisation to have the right culture, capacity and capability to achieve its purpose. This particular role sits within the HR Operations team that’s responsible for providing first-class administrative support around all HR, Recruitment and Payroll matters, for internal and external customers alike.
About the role
Among your many challenges will be the need to manage and triage all queries received electronically into the HR Enquiries mailbox, via phone call and face to face. We’ll also rely on you to advise and signpost staff to the intranet and, where appropriate, refer them to the relevant team member within the wider directorate. Maintaining office systems and ensuring our HRIS database is up-to-date will be important too, as will helping to ensure managers’ needs are met throughout the recruitment process. Auditing our print and online adverts to make sure quality is maintained and brand guidelines met, carrying out background checks for new employees, inputting payroll data and supporting the leavers’ process – these are just some aspects of this interesting, varied and vital role that will give you every opportunity to learn and develop.
We are happy to talk about flexible working, personal growth, and to promote a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve success based only on your merit.
About you
You’ll need to be highly organised, with meticulous attention to detail and the written and verbal communication skills it takes to enable the sharing of easy to understand information with diverse groups of people. A stickler for providing excellent customer service, you’re great at managing different workstreams and expectations too, often with conflicting priorities. What’s more you’re proactive, creative, eager to learn, enjoy working as part of a team and, crucially, well-versed in the use of Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and MS teams.
Benefits
We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, payroll giving, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme.
Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
