Job introduction

The Planning Service is looking to recruit a Senior Urban Design officer in the Development Management service. The successful candidate will champion excellent design and place-making in the Planning Service and wider Council for the wider city.

About the role

Can you help unlock the city’s aspirations for high quality buildings and place-making so that Brighton & Hove can adapt and develop attractively and sustainably this decade?

This is an exceptional opportunity to give design and place-making advice to one of England’s busiest and most improved unitary Development Management services within easy reach of London. You will have a wide-reaching impact on the city’s architecture and appearance including realising the goals set out by our City Plans and emerging Urban Design Framework; working with council teams to shape strategic projects; and supporting our ambition to become Carbon Neutral by 2030.

Reporting to one of the Planning Managers, you will need a positive, solution-finding approach to work whilst supporting income and meeting deadlines. You will be a lead officer at Design Panel meetings, provide advice on major applications to case officers and the Planning Committee; and represent the Council at appeals. As such you should have a sound and thorough knowledge, with extensive practical experience, of all aspects of building design and place-making.

The Planning Policy Team will be developing a new style Local Plan alongside design codes and you will have an important role in leading on this new area of work.

As a Senior Design Officer, you will be expected to provide training and to develop design skills of case officers with varying levels of experience. You will be delivering projects, interventions and initiatives and develop policies in-line with corporate and business plans.

Right now, we are mainly working from home and will provide flexible working arrangements to suit your circumstances on an ongoing basis with the COVID virus is defeated.

For an informal discussion, please contact Jane Moseley - Planning Manager on 07821 802839.

We highly recommend you read the guidance on how to ‘Maximise your chances’ below before you apply for this job. It is important you are able to show how you meet the essential criteria within the Person Specification when applying. Not following this guidance is likely to reduce your chances of success.
