Job introduction

St. Luke's Primary is a three form entry community school, which sits at the heart of an active, diverse and vibrant community within the city of Brighton & Hove.  With an educational philosophy and inclusive practices popular with parents, St. Luke's is over-subscribed and has twice been judged 'outstanding' (2010/2013).

Paid weeks per year: 52

Start date: 1st September 2021

About the role

Due to the early retirement of the current post holder, St. Luke's Primary is looking to recruit an ethical, innovative, collaborative and outward-facing leader with the skills and vision to embrace our ethos and drive continuous improvement.  This is an opportunity for an existing headteacher or highly experienced deputy who fully shares our vision of inclusivity, strong relationships, intelligent practice and high expectations for all.

So what is distinctive about our vision?

  • Always inspired by academic research, we have worked collaboratively over several years to re-shape the way that we learn together as a Learning Community and challenge some traditional practice.
  • Our pupils have voice and agency; learn to learn and become citizens together and, most often through our extensive peer tutoring approach, to take responsibility for everyone's progress.
  • Talk and enquiry sit at the heart of our Learning Community and we are currently exploring and building our dialogic practice which is strongly bound with our whole school Philosophy for Children and thinking skills curriculum.
  • Just like the children, our staff take risks, research and explore new pedagogy and to facilitate this we collaborate through a professional development and coaching model.
  • Relationships are strong and at the heart of our school.  A choice not to have a uniform and the use of first names throughout St. Luke's embodies our view of these relationships being mutual, not hierarchical.  We seek to engender intrinsic motivation not extrinsic compliance and therefore have adopted a no sanctions/rewards, attachment-focussed behaviour policy.
  • St. Luke's has a strong local reputation for its inclusive practice and SEND provision but we don't easily call ourselves 'inclusive'.  We are passionate about equalities and identity and think systemically about our vision in practice.  To be truly inclusive is something towards which we strive with whole staff and community commitment.

If you offer leadership which inspires and motivates others towards excellence and which will ensure the very best education for our children, then we would love to hear from you.
