About the role

The Local Area Coordinator role is a new and exciting one for Havering. Local Area Coordination is a new approach that is being developed here. It is an innovative way of supporting people experiencing difficult life situations (for example, people with disabilities, mental health needs and older people) to achieve their vision for a good life, to support people to be part of and contribute to their communities, and to strengthen the capacity of communities to welcome and include people.

Havering Council are recruiting 3 Local Area Coordinators to work alongside residents within South Hornchurch and Rainham and Wennington areas of Havering. Each Local Area Coordinator will have their own ‘patch’ within the area.  As a Local Area Coordinator you will “Walk alongside” people to achieve their vision of a better life, assisting that person to deal with the things is their life they want to change.

Residents of South Hornchurch and Rainham have told us that, for them a Local Area Coordinator is someone who:

·       Can work to support people from all walks of life, all backgrounds and work at grassroots level in the community effectively.

  • Is likeable, a person who is warm, friendly, easy-going and cooperative with others.  A person who can join a team and be part of the work family. Does not judge, treats people with empathy and compassion and listens to what people want for their life.

·       Understands how to connect people locally, has or has the skills to build contacts and relationships in the community and in local services.

  • Inner Strength to have the determination and ability to persevere in the face of adversity, being persistent when the going gets rough by remaining calm, cool and relaxed in challenging situations.
  • Is a leader, take charge and achieves results.  Is aspirational for people they walk alongside.

The role will be based out in the community, in community venues and building strong long term relationships with people, organisations and businesses in the patch will be key.

About You

You will need experience of working alongside and supporting individuals in complex situations with complex needs, and an understanding of asset-based community development. You will have an understanding and practical experience of advocacy and supporting people to plan and build on or develop their own strengths and assets.
