Cultural Heritage Development Officer

Salary: SO1 £30,585 to £31,557

X1 Fixed Term (up to 22 months) Full time (36) position

Enfield is delighted to be a priority area for the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) until 2024 and to have received two years of grant funding to allow us to grow our capacity for heritage engagement.

The borough has a unique mix of landscape, industrial and community heritage that is looked after by a range of organisations including the Council, the Enfield Society, Friends of Parks organisations and a high number of community and cultural groups. We are proud that the accredited Museum of Enfield is located in the heart of our cultural centre (the Dugdale) in Enfield Town and receives around 40k visitors per year and our popular Local Studies Collection is well supported by volunteers. Trent Park, Forty Hall and Myddleton House preserve the grandeur of Jacobean hunting lodges and estates while Whitewebbs Museum of Transport has a delightful and eclectic collection. One of the most diverse boroughs in London, Enfield is rich in cultural organisations celebrating different ethnic traditions, many of which organise festivals, events and celebrations that share their traditions and heritage. There is great opportunity for heritage engagement and huge public appetite to develop our cultural heritage programme.

With the support of the Heritage Fund, we are looking to grow sustainable capacity to design and delivery heritage activity projects across the borough. A call for projects in February 2020 demonstrated high levels of interest from a wide range of small and medium organisations, many of which have limited experience of delivering cultural heritage engagement projects. Our capacity building programme has been designed to support these organisations through training, grant funding and network development. The postholder will deliver this programme whilst supporting the Museum and Archive as they transition to new spaces and being part of a Culture team setting out to deliver a new inclusive strategy to connect Enfield through culture, with heritage at its heart.

The Culture team are seeking someone with a background in cultural heritage engagement and developing new audiences for heritage who will seize this opportunity to make a real difference to the people, organisations and heritage of Enfield. You will have the energy and skills to enthuse and inspire newcomers to heritage activity and support organisations to design and deliver their own projects, whilst working collaboratively with more experienced organisations. You will have ideas about what makes a great heritage project, the key skills that people need to master, and why it’s worth taking the time to understand and nurture new audiences. You’ll also have the patience and attention to detail needed to administer a lottery grants programme in line with NLHF and Council guidelines, and support others to navigate the system. You’ll be a natural partnerships person, keen to work with a wide range of collaborators within and without the Council.

You’ll get the opportunity to be part of a team working to shape a new museum and heritage service for the borough, work closely with a performing arts and cultural centre and spend time in a beautiful Grade I listed Jacobean manor house. And whilst this is a fixed-term role, we’re keen to support you in getting the most out of your time with us and developing your skills in support of your career goals.

Why it's great to work for Enfield Council:

  • An excellent pension through the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).
  • Up to 31 days annual leave depending on grade and length of service. You will also get eight public holidays per year and an extra day off at Christmas.
  • Interest free season ticket loan repayable over three or ten months.
  • Career development and learning experiences from a range of training courses and learning methods.
  • Employee Assistance Programme to provide advice and counselling services. This is a free and confidential service available to staff and members of their family.
  • Health and leisure discounts and tax-free bikes for work.

We are passionate about our people and how we deliver services to our community in Enfield. That’s why we encourage a culture that puts our customers at the heart of everything we do - by empowering our people to work together to find solutions, be open, honest and respectful, take responsibility and listen and learn. If you value these behaviours too, we’d love to hear from you - and of course we are always happy to Talk Flexible Working.
