An Exciting Time for transport in Brent

An exciting opportunity to help shape transport in the borough has arisen. Brent’s population is growing and with this comes increased pressure on the borough’s transport network. We are looking for a Principal Transport Planner to join Brent and play a key role in helping develop and implement the borough’s transport policies and programmes.

We are a tremendously vibrant London borough where the iconic arch of Wembley Stadium dominates the skyline. Spanning both inner and outer London, it is a borough of huge contrasts in terms of its economic, environmental, ethnic and social make up. Brent’s diversity is evident to all who visit our borough and our long history of ethnic and cultural diversity has created a place that is truly unique and valued by those who live and work here.

The Post

Working in the Transportation Planning Team in Spatial Planning, the post holder will be closely involved in all aspects of developing and implementing the Council’s transport policies and strategies, including the Brent Long-Term Transport Strategy, the Brent Active Travel Plan and the Local Implementation Plan, in consultation with a range of stakeholders, including elected members.

Alongside a focus on strategic policy, the post holder will also work on a variety of projects aimed at improving the transport offer in the borough and to promote healthy, sustainable travel. These include a number of public transport improvement schemes; various cycling and walking initiatives; and a programme to expand the Council’s electric vehicle charge point provision. The Council is also developing a pipeline of major transport initiatives which the post holder will be closely involved in.

No day at Brent is the same and the post holder will be actively involved in a wide-range of activities from preparing written responses to consultations and representing the borough at stakeholder meetings; to liaising with internal and external stakeholders and responding to queries from members of the public.

This permanent post, which offers flexible working arrangements, is based at Brent Council’s award winning offices which are within walking distance of Wembley Park station.

The Person

The ideal candidate will need to possess excellent communication skills with fluent written and verbal English, and be adept at report writing and presenting to senior management and elected members.

Self-motivation, persistence and being able to demonstrate outstanding time management skills are key in order to ensure that often tight and changing timescales are met. In addition, experience of both people and project management is vital.

A good understanding of transport policy at both local and national level is required along with demonstrable experience of working on a range of transport projects and initiatives. An ability to interpret transport modelling outputs would be welcome.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook and will have several years’ post-qualification experience in transport planning. Applications are welcomed from experienced transport planners who are currently working in private consultancy.

Closing Date: 6 December 2020 (23:00)

Assessment & Interview Date: w/c 14 December 2020
