About us
The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east. It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Cross rail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the both the Theatre Royal Stratford East and Stratford Circus Arts Centre offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.
Newham has a large housing regeneration programme that will build over 1,000 new council homes by 2022.
You will be working for the Performance & Development Team in Parking within the Environment and Sustainable Transport directorate where we're committed to making all our streets safer and healthier so that more people choose to walk and cycle, and can enjoy healthy and active local journeys with better air quality and less cars on local streets.
About the job
We are looking to appoint a Policy Officer. The Policy Officer will provide and lead on strategic advice on policy review, formulation and implementation. The successful candidate will implement and formulate policies in line with the Council’s cleaner air agenda, spotting new opportunities and working to ensure that the authority’s policy framework is fit for purpose. They will ensure policies are formulated in a manner which is accessible to all relevant internal and external audiences and which clearly relates to Newham’s corporate objectives, operational policies and service delivery.
This role is at scale PO3 indicative salary range £36,711 to £39,774*
*subject to change following local government acceptance of a 2.75% pay increase
About you
You will need to demonstrate detailed knowledge and experience of parking enforcement, policy development and legislation, including issues faced by local government and the policy context in which the Council operates. You will have sound experience of working with elected members and senior officers and advocating for policy positions. You should encompass a flexible approach to work and the ability to adapt to changes in fast moving environment. In addition, sound administration & IT skills and attention to detail are paramount, together with a genuine commitment to, and experience of, policy implementation and change.
