ABOUT THE JOB
We are looking for someone who has had recent experience of working with children, including those with visual impairment, for at least 2 years in an educational or similar setting. Ideally you will have supported children as teaching assistant or as a nursery nurse and have Braille qualification .
Require person to start as soon as possible or January 2021
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting a team of peripatetic teachers and support staff working in the London Borough of Newham. The team have the responsibility for supporting and providing advice for vision impaired pupils in early years, nursery and school settings.
ABOUT YOU
You will have experience and relevant qualifications to support and adapt materials for pupils requiring Braille. You will :
1 plan, deliver and update programmes under the supervision of the QTVI or Line Manager.
2 participate in the planning and delivery of training, including specialised programmes for visually impaired pupils.
3 work closely with parents/carers and staff in a way that demonstrates effective partnership working.
4 attend meetings including multi- disciplinary assessments, case conferences and reviews and actively contribute to the partnership work that arises to ensure approaches within the team support effective multi- agency working.
5 write support notes and maintain records (including day to day, mid term as well as end of term/ year).
6 adapt class material and employ techniques appropriate for visually impaired children.
7 attend school planning meetings with the class teacher.
8 supervise lunch and break times as required.
9 work closely with parents/carers and staff in a way that demonstrates effective partnership working.
You will need to have excellent oral and written communication skills and understand the barriers to learning that children and young people with a vision impairment face and how these barriers may be overcome. Specialist knowledge and experience with SEND and vision is essential.
An ability to work successfully with associated local and external teams such as early years, multi-sensory impairment, hearing impairment and health is essential. A commitment to Newham’s inclusive education policy and furthering equal opportunities for people disadvantaged in terms of race, gender and disability are essential. Good knowledge and experience of working with vision impaired children with additional and complex needs or multi-sensory impairment would be an advantage.
