About the role
At London Borough of Hillingdon, our mission of 'putting our residents first' is integrated into every area of the business. The role of Head of Building Safety will lead the Building Safety Services, ensuring agreed service plans and performance targets are delivered most effectively and efficiently. You will ensure that a culture of 'putting our residents first' and continued service improvement is maintained.
It is an exciting time to join the London Borough of Hillingdon as the Head of Building Safety. You will be responsible for ensuring the safety of Council owned building and primarily the safety of occupants of High Rise Residential Buildings (HRRBs). In addition, you will be responsible for coordinating various work and activity with colleagues from Housing departments and Maintenance teams, to ensure they are focused on new legislation and requirements and ensuring all activity is documented across our buildings.
The successful applicant will ensure compliance with specific regulatory requirements including operating within the registered regime and have a general duty to promote building safety and the safety of people in and about Council buildings.
The Head of Building Safety will directly manage 1 report and will be responsible for the development and performance of the service in line with the Council's HR policies, as well as being responsible for attracting and retaining an excellent performing Building Safety team.
The Head of Building safety will work with a range of colleagues across the council including Directors, Members and Managers, along with external partners such as contractors, partners and suppliers of the Council.
About you
The successful applicant will have a strong understanding of local government and the wider public sector context specifically.
You will
- Registered BSC relevant to building/category rating
- Hold NEBOSH national certificate in Fire Safety and Risk
- Have an appropriate level of Building Safety Managers Licence (or equivalent) and a Project Management Qualification
- Have comprehensive and in-depth experience in Building Safety and legislation
- Have experience and understanding in; managing buildings, building operations, undertaking risk, leading safety, delivering safety and monitoring & control.
- Have experience of maintaining and updated accurate data logging, numeric and photographic records in digital environment
You will be working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders so it is essential that you have excellent written and verbal communication, to allow you to develop contacts and relationships with residents, external organisations and internal contacts. You will be responsible for managing an allocated department budget, ensuring compliance with external and Council guidelines, as well as acting strategically to drive the service forward.
The Head of Building Safety is a key role, and we are looking for somebody who can work flexible hours, as the service demands which can include out-of-hours working and evening meetings. The work environment is busy and day to day activities will be varied, with a range of challenges - and you will be rewarded by watching the changes you have identified and implemented develop the service.
