The London Borough of Newham’s Private Sector Housing Service is at the forefront of the regulation of the private rented sector through its pioneering borough wide property licensing schemes. Our schemes have protected Tenants and Landlords by creating a genuine and tangible deterrent for Criminal Landlords.
We are looking build upon this good work and are looking for creative, enthusiastic and professional individuals to continue to improve our scheme. From the outset of employment there will be flexible working arrangements and training opportunities.
We wish to recruit talented people from not only London but across the Country. Newham offers a Relocation Package of up to £7000*, to provide assistance to newly appointed staff who are required to move home as a result of their appointment. *Subject to eligibility criteria.
Newham is located only 5 miles (8 km) east of the City of London and north of the River Thames. Our Office is only 13mins from the M11 and 20mins from the M25.
Public Transport in Newham is served by the London Underground and Overground, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), Buses and National Rail, which includes the new cross-London rail service (Elizabeth Line) that will stop close to our offices.
The Senior Environmental Health Officer/Private Sector Housing Officer role is within the private sector housing group. You will be responsible for carrying out the high standard regulatory work of the Private Rented Sector in Newham that will protect tenants and make the private rented sector a fairer place to operate.
You will take the lead in multi-agency operations and work effectively with various internal and external partners with no supervision.
You will be responsible for managing your own caseload and also monitor your team’s workload to assist in the delivery of team targets. It requires you to support and assist colleagues in resolving complex housing cases.
You must be willing to innovate, consult and devise solutions to problems you encounter.
You may be required to work early mornings, late evenings and/or weekends on a regular basis.
You will possess comprehensive knowledge of private sector housing and property licensing within the local government framework. Including, the enforcement and regulatory functions within the Housing Act, Public Health, other landlord and tenant law.
You will have the ability to supervise people, projects and the organisation of a team. You will need to demonstrate experience of leading on housing enforcement cases.
You will need to have excellent communication skills to motivate colleagues and improve team working. You should have experience of developing effective and successful working relationships.
You will need to have the aptitude and experience of using technology to input and access information using various IT systems.
