About Us
- We are a dynamic team, passionate about improving the health and tackling inequalities amongst Newham residents. You will be joining the Public Health team to lead the Well Newham Programme Health Promotion portfolio as a part of the 50 Steps health and well-being strategy.
- This is a fast moving team, used to finding and implementing solutions to some of the borough’s biggest challenges.
About the Job
- As part of the public health team, this post will support Public Health programmes to reduce inequalities and improve health in Newham, with a focus on effective health promotion towards improving health and wellbeing impacted by the social determinants of health.
- Reporting to the Assistant Director for Public Health, this job is about leading our Well Newham work programme which includes health promotion and health literacy. It requires close partnership working with a range of partners in the team and across across the health and care partnership including the voluntary sector, NHS primary and secondary care, third party providers, commissioners, and Newham Council’s Adults Services and communications teams.
- Key areas of delivery include development, promotion and evaluation of locally co-developed, culturally-competent, evidence-based tools and assets to support positive health promoting changes and reduce inequalities for Newham’s residents.
- You will be supported by existing tools and partnerships in the council and NHS as well as the Well Newham Directory of Services powered by Joy, the Well Newham Website, and committed stakeholder groups developing approaches to improve health literacy and support the workforce and practices of social prescribing.
- This role requires strong partnership collaboration, skills in using data to determine local needs and how they can be best addressed, including implementing public health policies, national guidance, commissioning and use of evidence-based interventions and strong project management and prioritisation skills.
- Collaboration with a range of partners and stakeholders will be essential.
- The role involves some line management of other members of the Public Health team and matrix working.

About You
You will need to hit the ground running with energy and experience but with lots of support from the team as you take on this important role. As a part of this role, you will:
- Contribute to work on the assessment of local health needs, notably around behaviour change based health improvement, embed culturally-competent evidence-based approaches and national guidance to increase health and wellbeing in Newham. A skill set around data analysis and behavioural science or economics is welcome.
- Assist in the interpretation of data and insight and implementation of public health policies
- Participate in the planning, development, implementation and monitoring of public health interventions and programmes, services and strategic plans
- Enjoy bringing partners together to deliver projects, with strong partnership working skills
- You will need excellent project management skills and the ability to manage multiple areas of work at once
- You will build partnerships and continuously identify opportunities for effective collaboration to create the best health for our adult residents and their communities
- Be able to review public health interventions and evaluate their impact and cost-effectiveness
