Principal Accountant

A vacancy has arisen for a Principal Accountant to work in finance for Children & Families and Education & Inclusion Service, to support to the Operational Directors in their statutory role.
You will work with the Head of Business Partnering, Group Accountant and a small team to deliver a range of outstanding, service focused accounting support, including production of the statement of accounts and management accounting.
Preferably a CCAB qualified accountant, you will need to have a sound understanding of local government finance and strong technical skills. You should also be a confident communicator who is able to foster great working relationships with those you work with, and you’ll relish having responsibility for a wide remit and delivering a range of support functions. A flexible approach and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities is essential, as is the ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Preparation of the medium-term financial strategy and annual budget and calculation of the levy
- Monthly budget monitoring and reporting and support to budget managers
- Preparation of the annual statement of accounts and liaison with external auditors
- Completion of statutory returns
- Supervision of the day-today tasks undertaken by the senior finance officer/finance apprentice
- Training budget holders on finance matters
- Ad hoc financial support and advice
