Iconic buildings such as Tower Bridge, The Old Bailey and the Barbican, as well as the corporate premises of many major banks and businesses, give the City of London a street scene like no other. Covering an area of just 15 square miles, it is visited daily by thousands and known by millions more across the globe. The City of London Corporation is responsible for its upkeep and ensuring a good quality of life for those who live, work and visit here.
As a Street Environment Officer, you will play a vital role in controlling and improving the cleanliness and safety of our local environment. From dealing with illegal street trading to tackling noise nuisance, addressing improper disposal of waste to preventing obstruction of pavements, you can make a real difference. As well as carrying out patrols, inspections and investigations, you’ll keep thorough records and enter data and evidence into our systems. You will work closely with other council officers in areas such as cleansing, highways and housing, and also with the City of London Police.
This is a public-facing role that requires good interpersonal and negotiating skills, particularly when faced with challenging customers. You will have the ability to work independently and to meet targets and deadlines. A high level of numeracy and literacy is important, along with excellent IT skills and a working knowledge of waste management and other environmental issues. Extensive enforcement experience within a waste and cleansing environment is required and must be demonstrable. A full UK driving licence is essential, ideally with LGV entitlement.
