About the role

One trainee will train primarily in the Commercial Law Team undertaking  seats in the Contracts and Procurement Team and the Complex Projects Team. You will also have the opportunity to experience contentious legal work in either the Housing and Litigation Team or the Employment Team.

The commercial work at Brighton & Hove is complex and demanding and our trainees see a real impact in the City as a result of their work. The other trainee will train in the Social Care and Education Service Team and will focus primarily on adult social care. You will have opportunity to experience litigation in the Court of Protection and supporting and advising clients in undertaking statutory duties in connection with the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act and Inquest work. In addition the trainee will gain experience of Education Tribunal work and the possibility of working with Child Care lawyers. This trainee position is a fantastic opportunity to work within an established, very experienced team of lawyers supporting the most vulnerable people living in our city.

The successful candidates will have a strong academic record and relevant work experience. Excellent client care, communication skills, a positive attitude and a willingness to develop in the role are essential.

The training contracts offered comply with the Law Society requirements to enable a qualified applicant who successfully completes the training period to be admitted as a solicitor. The post is open to those who have successfully completed the Legal Practice Course. In exceptional circumstances we will consider applications from those who are studying for the LPC part-time, provided they have a confirmed place on the LPC by the date of the interview.

You will benefit from our genuine commitment to on-going professional development. This is further enhanced by our shared services partnership with the legal services of East Sussex County Council, West Sussex County Council, and Surrey County Council as Orbis Public Law.
