Clerk to Governing Boards
Salary: Scale S01 - £31434 to £32577
Permanent, Term-time only (+4 weeks.), 36 hrs per week

We are seeking to appoint a skilled and experienced clerk and/or individual with high levels
of literacy, a strong ability to process complex information, and experience of interpreting
and advising on procedures and policy, legal aspects, and matters of compliance.
You will be expected to provide a professional and comprehensive clerking service to a
group of governing boards in accordance with statutory requirements to enable governors to
discharge their statutory functions most effectively. Your duties will include effective
administration, information management, and advisory responsibilities, displaying best
practice to support strong governance of schools. We particularly welcome applications from
the educational, legal, or policy fields.

The 36 hours per week will be worked over 5 days Monday to Friday, school term-time only.
Early morning / Daytime / Evening clerking will be necessary on a regular basis, flexibly but
will not exceed 36 hours per week. Weekend work may be required exceptionally. You will
provide a professional clerking service to Governing Bodies, supporting a minimum of 130
meetings per year, as part of the core team of Governance Services. The governing board
meetings in the main are scheduled in the afternoons or evenings (typically anytime between
4pm-8:30pm) or in the mornings (typically anytime between 7:30am-10am). You would also
be expected to clerk some day time extraordinary meetings, such as Pupil Disciplinary
Committees, Independent Review Panels, HR Hearings, etc. The rest of your time would be
mainly dedicated to preparing for, and doing up follow-up work such as minute writing,
arising from the business of the governing bodies. You would be expected to support the
Governance Services core team and undertake additional or other duties as may be
appropriate to achieve the objectives of the post and as directed and deemed appropriate by
your Line Manager.


This role will enable you to gain unique insights into how schools are run at a very high
strategic level, and how governance drives school improvement. You will be instrumental in
making a difference, supporting strong governance of schools which will lead to changing
the life chances of every child in our community and beyond. This is particularly relevant for
those from the most disadvantaged starting points and those whose progress is stalled by
challenging barriers, whatever they might be.
As the post holder, you will be part of our diverse team of clerking professionals and have
access to high quality professional training in governance clerking, as well as ongoing
support and guidance of an experienced core team. You will be able to draw on the wider
expertise of Hackney Learning Trust and have access to a wide range of resources including
those necessary in order to develop expertise to provide statutory advice and guidance to
governing boards, Head teachers and senior officers. You will gain invaluable insights into
governance best practice, procedure, policy, and legal aspects.
