The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. We work to promote public confidence in the democratic process and ensure its integrity.
As a statutory body, the Commission relies on its Legal Team for high quality legal advice and support to advance its objectives and keep it within the law. The Legal Team has a crucial role to play within the Commission.
This is a very interesting time to be joining the Commission. It has a growing public profile and it operates in the full glare of the public spotlight in an increasingly contested regulatory environment.
In the past ten years the Legal Team has grown to reflect the Commission’s developing needs for legal support. We have recently restructured and the new Team will consist of 12 members of staff under the leadership of the General Counsel.
This post has been created as part of that re-structure and is a new Legal Officer post to work closely with our existing Legal Officer. We have identified a need for greater support to the Team and its lawyers because of the introduction of our new case management system, Tricostar. The Legal Officers are both going to be super-users / administrators but it is likely that this post will do more of this type of work.
Other tasks will include:
- Generating management and financial reports from the CMS
- Arranging meetings, preparing agendas, taking minutes and following up actions.
- Printing and collating papers for the General Counsel
- Assistance with litigation, including preparing bundles, attending court, taking notes
- Drafting correspondence for approval by lawyer
- Help with FoI and DPA requests
- Keeping the Legal Team’s library organised and up-to-date
- Legal research
This is general support role but clearly having worked in a legal office would be an advantage.
This is an exciting time to be joining both the Team and the Commission. The Commission’s profile has never been higher and, while it is not possible to predict the future, it is safe to say that whatever happens in UK politics over the next few months, the Commission will definitely need a strong legal team.
